Meet the Fokkens

fokkens

No, no not ‘Meet the Fockers.’ I’ve avoided that one pretty well, even that one time that I went to LA for the holidays and my mom really wanted to watch it.

Here’s another prostitution documentary that’s available on Netflix. It’s perhaps the polar opposite of Whore’s Glory. I’m only 30 minutes into it, but I venture to say that it could almost be considered a… feel good? prostitution documentary. All I know is that that my Netflix algorithm is wrecked from here on out…

Meet the Fokkens

This doc follows a pair of 69 year old twin sisters in Amsterdam who have been working in the red light district for 50 years. One had to retire due to arthritis, and the other is still at it to cover her bills. The film has so far glossed over the more dangerous and sad aspects of the trade, and it’s really more of a character study of these willful ladies.

Check out the trailer:

It’s a fine line between a loving and a leering take on prostitution, but there’s not too many interviews, it’s mostly just following the sisters around as they service clients, make coffee, and go on beach rides where they read over old journals together and giggle. It makes life as an older person look like fun actually.

Style

This shirt has one fatal flaw

Forever 21 decided to ruin a fantastic shirt by not giving it a back or sides. Ugh. If only a company would come around and copy the clothes they copy, except make them conservative.

Health

Mood Disorders in the Media: Aaron Swartz
The conversation in the media around depression and other mood disorders has been supercharged lately, what with the too numerous tragedies and the implications of health care reform. I read all relevant pieces that I come across, so I thought that I would start flagging the good ones here.

A few weeks ago I read a New Yorker bio piece about Aaron Swartz. I didn’t know a ton about him and his life (unfortunately I knew more about his death, how terrible is that?), yet I was touched by the piece.

While I read it I  found myself nodding along with descriptions of him from his friends and family, and also excerpts from his personal blog. There were expressed so many familiar feelings of continuous struggle, questioning life as a game, longing for intimacy yet shutting oneself off from others, and being afraid to ask for help. Well, maybe too afraid, or maybe too proud. Anyways, it all felt a bit too familiar. It’s a very thoughtful and sometimes infuriating piece.

You should read it if you have spare time. Of course you have spare time.

Craft, Knitting

New Project: Sunday Swing Socks

I haven’t shared any knit projects in so long because I keep ripping them to shreds.

Finally the curse is broken.

It took me three tries and about three hours but I finally got into the swing of things with the Sunday Swing socks. The pattern is from Knitty and is a little spicier than your usual stockinette stitch socks but easy enough to keep up once you establish the pattern. The yarn is Jitterbug, a present to myself from a million years ago.

I fucking love this stitch definition! Look at that sock! Hot!
